Ross Fettes is a Scottish Bass-Baritone studying in his second year of Opera School at the Royal College of Music in London. He is currently studying under the tutelage of Graeme Broadbent. In his first year of a Masters in Performance at the Royal College of Music he studied under the tutelage of Brindley Sherratt and his second year he studied with Graeme Broadbent. He is a Stephen Roberts Scholar supported by the Stephen Catto Memorial Scholarship Award, a Countess of Munster Trust scholar and a Josephine Baker Trust Scholar. Studying for his Bachelor of Music Honours Degree at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland was a fantastic opportunity to work and study with Iain Paton.
His most recent opera performances include the roles of Don Inigo in the Royal College of Music’s production of Ravel’s L'heure espagnole, Baron Mirko Zeta in the Royal College of Music’s production of the Merry Widow, Pasquariello in the Royal College of Music’s production of Don Giovanni Tenorio, Figaro in Westminster Opera’s production of Le Nozze di Figaro, The Conductor Royal College of Music’s production of Barnum’s Bird, Colline in Hurn Court’s production of La Bohème, L’arbe in the Royal College of Music’s production of L’enfant et Les sortilèges, Zuniga In Carshalton Opera’s production of Carmen, Chorus in Grange Park Opera’s production of Der fliegende Holländer, Frank Ford (cover) in British Youth Opera’s production of Sir John in Love, Superintendent Budd in St Pauls Opera’s production of Albert Herring and The immigration officer (cover) in the Royal College of Music’s production of Flight.
Further opera credits include Snug Midsummer Night’s Dream, Leporello Don Giovanni, Budd Albert Herring, and Panglossian Candide (Royal College of Music opera scenes). An experienced oratorio singer, recent performances include Handel’s Messiah (Mayfield Festival Choir) and Mozart’s Requiem (Hogarth Singers). Ross performed with Scottish Opera in the 2019 touring production of Amadeus and the Bard.
Competition success includes receiving Highly Commended in the Molly Robb Prize for Young Singers at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in both 2018 and 2019, and receiving both the Agnes Duncan Trophy, and The Forbes Morton Memorial Award at the Glasgow Music Festival in 2017.
As part of the Scottish Opera Young Company, Ross performed in the following productions between 2015-2020: Frogs (2020), Orpheus and Eurydice (2019), Opera Sparks (2018), Dido and Aeneas (2017), Excerpts from The Rakes Progress (2017), The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari (2016), and in a Masterclass with Nicky Spence (2016).
Ross’s next performance will be in the Royal College of Music’s production of Le Nozze di Figaro where he will play the title role of Figaro.
